I discovered this secret location whilst researching new locations for an upcoming event, and guess what? turns out it's a mini museum with a secret garden. Just perfect!

My new find "The Jaekel House" is a two storey restored colonial mansion turned mini Museum, which originally housed the General Manager of The Nigerian Railway Corporation, before it was later converted to a rest house for the railway senior staff. However, its now been managed by Legacy 1995; a Non-Governmental Organisation.

The classic colonial architecture is situated at Ebute Metta, and was built in 1898. It was named after a former superintendent of the Nigerian Railway Corporation who served for 27 years; late Francis Jaekel OBE, an author of 3 volumes of "The History of the Nigerian Railway". A picture of him in traditional attire was up on the wall close to the stairs. Sadly we weren't allowed to take pictures inside the mansion, even though we made a payment of ₦1000 each to gain access into the building for a tour of the mansion.

There were quite a number of photographic archives dating far back as 1940's. Including tools, clothes and equipment that was in use around that time.

Amongst all, for me the kerosene fridge in there stood out. I never knew that existed. I learnt those days, a refrigerator can be powered just the way a stove is lit. I think that should be reinvented.

Truly, hidden treasures are found in places you least expect. You should check it out.
